Calendars from 2006

My mom (61) uses one of those large paper calendars to keep track of her schedule. She has been doing this since I was in elementary school. Her calendar these days seem mostly blank, with the occasional notes of her hospital appointments or flight plans to visit her home country.

She keeps all of her old calendars on a bookshelf at my childhood home, and every time I have been back home I never bothered to pick one up…until today.

The one that I happened to pick up was from 2006. The calendar was filled with dentist appointments for me, soccer practice pick up times for my younger brother, birthday parties I was attending, weekend playdates, piano lessons, and more.

The piles of calendars served as record of the life we had in those days, and reading them in my childhood home did something to me. It was the first time that I ever felt that these calendars were beautiful. Funny that I used to think nothing of them. If anything I had felt that physical calendars were so outdated. Funny that now they could make me cry.
